How to compress an image to any file size
Type the size limit, drop an image, and get the highest-quality JPG, WebP or PNG that fits — checked to the byte. Runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
- Drop, paste or choose one image — or several with Pro.
- Type the maximum file size you need (KB or MB) or tap a preset.
- Pick JPEG, WebP or PNG, and optionally a maximum width or height.
- Compare original and compressed side by side, then download.

How the compressor hits an exact size
The tool decodes your image in the browser, then re-encodes it with the browser's own JPEG, WebP or PNG encoder. For JPEG and WebP it runs a binary search on the quality setting — usually 6 to 10 test encodes — and keeps the highest quality whose file is at or under your target. If even a low quality (40%) is still too large, it reduces the pixel dimensions by the amount the byte count suggests, then searches quality again, so you get the largest picture that fits rather than a blocky one. PNG is lossless, so for PNG only the dimensions change. If your file is already under the target and you keep the same format, the original is returned untouched.
Everything happens on your device with the Canvas API; nothing is uploaded, and the re-encoded file does not carry the original EXIF metadata (camera, GPS).
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to a specific file size?
Enter the size limit (for example 100 KB) and drop your image. The tool searches the encoder quality automatically and, only if needed, reduces the dimensions until the file is at or under the limit. You see the exact byte count before you download.
JPEG, WebP or PNG — which gives the smallest file?
For photos, WebP is usually 25–35% smaller than JPEG at similar quality, and JPEG is accepted everywhere. PNG is lossless and best for screenshots, logos and transparency, but it is much larger for photos. If a form only accepts JPG, choose JPEG.
Will compressing reduce the resolution?
Only when necessary. The tool first lowers quality while keeping every pixel. It shrinks the dimensions only if even 40% quality is still over your target, and then it keeps the largest size that fits.
Does it keep transparency?
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.
Can I compress many images at once?
Yes, with Gridloom Pro: select several images and download them all as one ZIP, each compressed to the same target.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device, which also makes it safe for ID photos and signatures.
Is it free?
Yes. Compressing one image at a time is free with no signup and no watermark. Gridloom Pro adds batch compression of many images with a single ZIP download.
