How to compress an image for Discord
Getting “Your files are too powerful”? Drop the image and pick a preset: under the free attachment limit, a 128×128 emoji under 256 KB, or a 512×512 avatar. Everything runs in your browser.
- Drop, paste or choose the image you want to send or upload to Discord.
- Pick a preset: 10 MB (safe for any account), 20 MB (current free limit*), emoji, avatar or server banner.
- Check the side-by-side preview and the exact size.
- Download, then drag the file into Discord.
Discord image limits (at time of writing, October 2026)
| What | Limit / recommended size |
|---|---|

| Attachment, Nitro Basic | 50 MB |
| Custom emoji | Under 256 KB; 128×128 px recommended; JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP or AVIF |
| Avatar / server icon | Square; at least 128×128, 512×512 looks sharp; shown as a circle |
| Server banner | 16:9, 960×540 recommended (Boost Level 2) |
Discord changes these limits from time to time and is testing different limits with some users. Check Discord's File Attachments FAQ and emoji help page for the current values. Gridloom is not affiliated with Discord.
How the compressor hits an exact size
The tool decodes your image in the browser, then re-encodes it with the browser's own JPEG, WebP or PNG encoder. For JPEG and WebP it runs a binary search on the quality setting — usually 6 to 10 test encodes — and keeps the highest quality whose file is at or under your target. If even a low quality (40%) is still too large, it reduces the pixel dimensions by the amount the byte count suggests, then searches quality again, so you get the largest picture that fits rather than a blocky one. PNG is lossless, so for PNG only the dimensions change. If your file is already under the target and you keep the same format, the original is returned untouched.
Everything happens on your device with the Canvas API; nothing is uploaded, and the re-encoded file does not carry the original EXIF metadata (camera, GPS).
Frequently asked questions
What is Discord's file size limit for free users?
At time of writing (October 2026), Discord's File Attachments FAQ says the free upload limit is 20 MB, raised from 10 MB in August 2026; Nitro Basic is 50 MB. Some help pages still show 10 MB, and Discord is testing different limits with some users, so compressing to under 10 MB works for everyone.
How big can a Discord emoji be?
Custom emojis must be under 256 KB. Discord recommends 128×128 pixels, and accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and AVIF. Use the Emoji preset, or the dedicated Discord emoji maker for transparent padding options.
What size should a Discord avatar or server icon be?
Use a square image. 128×128 is the minimum; 512×512 looks sharp on high-resolution screens. Discord shows it as a circle, so keep the subject centered.
Why does Discord say my image is too large on mobile?
Discord now checks the original file size before compressing on mobile, the same way desktop does. Compress the image here first, then upload the smaller file.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device, which also makes it safe for ID photos and signatures.
Is it free?
Yes. Compressing one image at a time is free with no signup and no watermark. Gridloom Pro adds batch compression of many images with a single ZIP download.
