What size is a Discord banner?

Profile banner: PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10MB, at least 680×240 px (Nitro only). Upload 1360×480 for a sharp result. Server banner: at least 960×540 in 16:9; Discord resizes a 1920×1080 upload. Invite background: 1920×1080, JPG or PNG. Spec from Discord Help, read October 24, 2026.

How to resize an image for a Discord banner

Discord has two banners of very different shapes: a wide 17:6 strip behind your avatar and a 16:9 image at the top of a server's channel list. Most images fit neither. This tool crops both from one picture, each with its own framing, and shows where the avatar and the server name will sit before you upload.

  1. Choose your image. A 2400×1600 sample is already loaded, so you can see the result first.
  2. Frame the profile banner: zoom and drag the wide preview until the important part is inside the dashed 600×240 area.
  3. Click the server banner preview and frame it too. Keep the top strip, where Discord puts the server name, fairly plain.
  4. Download the 1360×480 profile banner, or every file as a ZIP.
  5. In Discord, open User Settings, then Profiles, then Change Banner, upload the file and tap Apply. For a server: Server Settings, then Overview, then Server Banner Background.

All read on October 24, 2026. Discord's help center shows “Custom Profiles” as last edited March 11, 2026, “Per-Server Profiles” August 6, 2025, “Server Banners” May 31, 2022 and “Server Invite Background” April 8, 2022. The blog post is dated December 14, 2021. Gridloom is not affiliated with Discord.

680×240 or 600×240?

Both appear on Discord's own pages. The newest one, “Custom Profiles” (edited March 2026), says a profile banner needs a minimum of 680×240. The “Per-Server Profiles” article and the 2021 design blog still say 600×240. They agree on the height (240) and only differ in width, and neither gives the exact shape of Discord's crop box.

So this tool makes 17:6 files (the 680×240 shape), which meet the newer minimum, and marks the middle 600×240 with dashed lines. That part survives whichever of the two widths Discord's cropper uses, as long as its crop is centred. Discord doesn't say where its default crop (“Skip”) sits, so look at the crop window before you tap Apply. Keep faces and anything important inside the dashed lines. The marking is our own way of covering both figures; Discord doesn't mention it.

What this tool makes, and why

FileSizeWhy
Profile banner1360×480Our choice: twice the 680×240 minimum, so it stays sharp on 2× (Retina and most phone) screens and leaves room for Discord's own crop. It's far below the 10MB cap.
Profile banner680×240Discord's stated minimum. Use it if you want the smallest file that is accepted.
Server banner1920×1080 and 960×540Discord recommends 960×540 and says it resizes 1920×1080 itself. The full-HD one keeps detail if your art has fine lines.
Invite background1920×1080The only size Discord gives for it. JPG or PNG, never GIF.

Every file is kept under 10,000,000 bytes. Discord states the 10MB limit for profile banners only and gives no file-size limit for server banners or invite backgrounds, so applying the same cap everywhere is our own safety margin.

Why is my Discord banner blurry?

Usually because the part of the image you're using is smaller than the banner. Cropping a 17:6 strip out of a phone photo or a screenshot often leaves only a few hundred pixels, which then gets stretched. A file at exactly the minimum also has no spare detail for high-density (2×) screens or for Discord's own crop. Start with the biggest original you have, upload the 1360×480 file, and watch the status line here: it tells you when a crop is enlarged and by how much. Zooming in with the slider (or in Discord's crop window) throws pixels away, so zoom here only as far as you need.

Can you get a Discord banner without Nitro?

Not an image. Discord says only Nitro members can upload an image or animated GIF as a profile banner. What you can do without Nitro is pick a banner colour: “Even without Discord Nitro, you can also edit your banner color to match, or contrast with, your avatar.” (Discord blog, “Make Your Discord Profile Shine” (2021)). Server banners are a server perk instead: Boosting Level 2, or a Partner server. We don't cover client mods that fake a banner only you can see.

Animated GIF banners

This tool resizes still images. If you drop a GIF it saves the first frame and tells you so. Discord accepts animated GIF profile banners from Nitro members under 10MB, and animated server banners at Boosting Level 3. Discord says an animated server banner “animates when the guild first loads for 5 seconds, then it pauses”, animates again when it scrolls back into view and on hover, and doesn't animate with reduced motion on. Invite backgrounds can't be animated at all.

How to change your Discord banner

Profile banner: on desktop, click the cogwheel at the bottom-left to open User Settings, then the Profiles tab, then Change Banner. On mobile, tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner, then Edit Profile. Upload the 1360×480 file, check the crop and tap Apply. Server banner: Discord says you need the “manage server” or “administrator” permission; go to Server Settings > Overview and scroll to the bottom to find the Server Banner Background section. Steps from Discord Help, “Custom Profiles” and Discord Help, “Server Banners”, October 24, 2026.

What about your Discord avatar?

The help pages don't give an avatar pixel size, and they don't fully agree on formats: “Custom Profiles” says “Supported file types are PNG and GIF”, while “Per-Server Profiles” says “Like profile avatars, PNG and JPG are the supported file types”, with a maximum of 8 MB for server avatars. The 2021 blog says the avatar is “cropped to a circle when displayed on Discord” and suggests a square image “around 200x200 pixels at minimum, and under 10 MB”. A square PNG is safe under all of these. The Discord image compressor has a square avatar preset, and the Discord emoji maker does 128×128 emoji.

What this tool doesn't do

It doesn't make animated banners, add text, or remove backgrounds. It can't check Nitro or Boost status, and it doesn't upload anything to Discord: you download the files and upload them yourself. The previews show roughly where Discord puts your avatar and the server name; Discord's exact layout differs between the profile popout, the full profile and the mobile app.

Making banners for other sites? The YouTube banner resizer does 2560×1440 channel art with its safe area, the LinkedIn banner resizer does 1584×396, and the Twitch emote resizer does 112/56/28 px emotes.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Discord banner?

A profile banner must be a PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10MB, at least 680×240 pixels (Discord Help, “Custom Profiles”, read October 24, 2026). A server banner should be at least 960×540 in 16:9, and Discord resizes a 1920×1080 upload itself (“Server Banners”). For a sharp profile banner, upload 1360×480.

What is the Discord profile banner size in pixels?

At least 680×240 px, under 10MB, PNG, JPG or animated GIF, according to Discord's “Custom Profiles” help article (edited March 2026). Older Discord pages say 600×240. A 1360×480 file meets both and stays sharp on high-density screens.

Is the Discord banner 680×240 or 600×240?

Discord's newest help article says 680×240 minimum. Its “Per-Server Profiles” article and a 2021 blog post say 600×240. The height is the same; only the width differs. Make it 680×240 (or 1360×480) and keep important things inside the middle 600×240, and it works either way.

What aspect ratio is a Discord banner?

Discord doesn't state a ratio for profile banners, only the 680×240 minimum, which is 17:6 (about 2.83:1). Server banners are 16:9, which Discord does state. This tool frames each shape separately.

What size is a Discord server banner?

At least 960×540 pixels in a 16:9 ratio; that is also Discord's recommended size, for both static and animated banners. You can upload 1920×1080 and Discord will resize it. Keep the top 48px plain, because the server name sits there, and avoid logos or text.

What is the Discord banner file size limit?

10MB for profile banners (“under 10MB”). Discord's help pages give no file-size limit for server banners or invite backgrounds. This tool keeps every file under 10,000,000 bytes anyway.

Why is my Discord banner blurry?

Most often the part of the image used is smaller than the banner and gets stretched, for example a 17:6 strip cut from a phone screenshot. Use a bigger original, upload the 1360×480 file, and avoid zooming far in. The status line here warns you when a crop is enlarged.

Can I have a Discord banner without Nitro?

Not an image or GIF: Discord says only Nitro members can upload those. Without Nitro you can still choose a banner colour. Server banners need Boosting Level 2 (or a Partner server).

Can I make a GIF banner with this tool?

No. It resizes still images and saves the first frame of a GIF. Discord accepts animated GIF profile banners from Nitro members, under 10MB, and animated server banners at Boosting Level 3.

What size is a Discord server invite background?

1920×1080, JPG or PNG. Discord says invite backgrounds “cannot animate/be a GIF”, and they unlock at Boosting Level 1. Tick the invite background box here to get one.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Cropping and resizing happen in your browser with the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device.

Is it free?

Yes. All five sizes and the ZIP are free, with no signup and no watermark. Gridloom Pro adds batch mode: many images in, one ZIP of banners out, with the same framing.
