How to resize a signature for an online form
Photograph your signature, and this tool trims the empty paper, turns the background clean white and fits it to the exact pixel size and file size a form asks for, such as 140 × 60 px at 10–20 KB.
- Sign in black ink on plain white paper and take a photo from directly above in daylight, with no shadow from your phone.
- Drop the photo here. The sample shows what to expect.
- Pick your form's preset (IBPS 140×60 px or SSC 6.0×2.0 cm), or type the pixel size and KB limit your form gives.
- Check that the result reads clearly and that the size is in range, then download the JPG.
Signature specs on common forms (at time of writing, October 2026)
| Form | Signature | Photo |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS (bank exams, e.g. CRP PO/MT-XVI) | Black ink on white paper, 140 × 60 px (preferred), 10–20 KB, JPG/JPEG, not in capital letters | 200 × 230 px (preferred), 20–50 KB |
| SSC (e.g. CGL 2026) | JPEG/JPG, 10–20 KB, about 6.0 cm wide × 2.0 cm high; blurred or miniature signatures are rejected | Captured live in the application |
Sources: IBPS “Pre-Requisites for Applying Online / Guidelines for Scanning and Upload of Documents”, CRP PO/MT-XVI (ibps.in); SSC “Combined Graduate Level Examination 2026” notice, signature clause (ssc.gov.in). Each recruitment notice can change these values, so check the one you are applying for. Gridloom is not affiliated with IBPS or SSC.
The SSC notice gives centimetres but no resolution. The SSC preset makes a 472 × 157 px file marked at 200 dpi, which measures 6.0 × 2.0 cm. For the IBPS photo (200 × 230 px, 20–50 KB), use the 50 KB compressor with Width 200 and Height 230.
What the clean-up does
Trim finds the ink and crops away the empty paper, leaving a small margin, so the signature fills the box instead of shrinking to a “miniature”. Pure white paper applies a levels adjustment: the paper tone becomes white and the ink gets darker. Your strokes are not redrawn or changed in shape. Tiny 140 × 60 px files are often smaller than 10 KB even at 100% JPEG quality. In that case the tool adds a blank comment block inside the JPEG so it reaches the 10 KB minimum. The picture itself is unchanged, and the status line tells you when this happens.
How the compressor hits an exact size
The tool decodes your image in the browser, then re-encodes it with the browser's own JPEG, WebP or PNG encoder. For JPEG and WebP it runs a binary search on the quality setting — usually 6 to 10 test encodes — and keeps the highest quality whose file is at or under your target. If even a low quality (40%) is still too large, it reduces the pixel dimensions by the amount the byte count suggests, then searches quality again, so you get the largest picture that fits rather than a blocky one. PNG is lossless, so for PNG only the dimensions change. If your file is already under the target and you keep the same format, the original is returned untouched.
Everything happens on your device with the Canvas API; nothing is uploaded, and the re-encoded file does not carry the original EXIF metadata (camera, GPS).
Frequently asked questions
How do I resize my signature to 140 × 60 pixels?
Pick the IBPS preset, or type Width 140 and Height 60 with Shape set to “Fit inside”. The tool trims the empty paper, centres the signature in a white 140 × 60 px box without stretching it, and saves a JPG between 10 and 20 KB.
My signature file is smaller than 10 KB. How do I make it bigger?
A 140 × 60 px image is tiny, so even at 100% JPEG quality it can come out under 10 KB. The tool first raises the quality to 100%. If the file is still too small, it adds a blank comment block to the JPEG so the file reaches the minimum. The image is unchanged and still opens normally everywhere.
How do I make the signature background white?
Leave “Make the paper pure white” switched on. It turns grey or yellowish paper into clean white and makes the ink darker, which also helps the file stay small. Shadows across the paper can leave grey patches, so photograph it in even light.
Why was my signature rejected as too small or unclear?
Usually because it was photographed with lots of empty paper around it, so after resizing the strokes become a few pixels thick. Trimming fixes that. Also sign with a thicker black pen and avoid capital-letter signatures: IBPS does not accept them.
Can I resize a signature for other forms?
Yes. Type the width, height and KB limit your form gives. Use “Fit inside” to keep the signature's shape, or one of the “keep shape” presets if the form only gives a file-size limit.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device, which also makes it safe for ID photos and signatures.
Is it free?
Yes. Compressing one image at a time is free with no signup and no watermark. Gridloom Pro adds batch compression of many images with a single ZIP download.
